- In 2022 he was awarded by Queen Elizabeth II with the official recognition of the Order of the British Empire for his services in hematology.
- The specialist is a pioneer in the research and application of stem cell transplants that have saved hundreds of lives.
- Their contributions could be applied to cell regeneration in people with diabetes or severe burns.
To be able to stand out at a national level in a union as complex as the health sector is quite difficult. There are many trained specialists with extensive experience. And doing it globally is even more difficult for the same reasons. Despite the above, there is a Mexican doctor who has achieved it and today is considered a world leader in immunotherapy.
In this case it is the Dr. Alejandro Madrigal Fernandez, who leads research on cell therapy in stem cell transplantation. In fact, thanks to her work, hundreds of patients with different types of cancer have been saved, reported the general director of the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR) “Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra”, Carlos Pineda Villaseñor.
He also highlighted that the contributions of the scientist Madrigal Fernández to the Advances in cell therapy could be applied to the area of gerontological biotechnology. Also for cell regeneration in people with diabetes or who suffered severe burns.
The most recent global advances in immunotherapy are led by a Mexican
During a presentation, Madrigal Fernández pointed out that in clinical trials carried out by his working group it has been found that Stem cells have the ability to self-renew. With this, they generate different components that can serve as an anti-inflammatory treatment and for injuries or ulcers in people living with diabetes.
He explained that cell therapy is used to replace or repair the function of abnormal cells that cause diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, lung and breast cancer, as well as infections and inflammatory processes.

In the “Nanahuatzin” Auditorium of the INR and before the institute’s medical community, the researcher and professor of Hematology at the University College Londonhighlighted that, in stem cell transplantation, the donor’s cells are genetically modified in the laboratory and then introduced to the patient who requires them to restore normal function, treat their disease and achieve a cure.
He indicated that, in the world, more than a million and a half patients have been treated with stem cell transplantation, with which 50 percent have survived.
This treatment began more than 50 years ago, as a result of the search for the replacement of the immune system in people who lost this capacity due to radiation and nuclear accidents.
Other Immunotherapy Specialist Distinctions
The scientist Alejandro Madrigal Fernández was awarded by Queen Elizabeth II with the official recognition of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services in hematology, stem cell transplantation and cancer research.
Alejandro Madrigal Fernández has given more than 600 conferences in 58 countries. The findings of his protocols are published in more than 500 articles in journals such as Nature, Nature Genetics and The Lancet, among other.
He is an honorary member of the National Academies of Medicine of Mexico and the Mexican Academies of Surgery, as well as a correspondent of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and an emeritus professor of the National System of Researchers (SNI) of the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt).
