If we recently went through the Mercadona shelves in search of the best products for vegetarians and vegans, that collection has recently suffered a loss. The vegan pizza that used to be found in the frozen area has been withdrawal of the sale. Why? The reason is still unknown.
This has been confirmed by the Valencian company in a direct message through Instagram to Belen Quesada, and that the popular account @veganoporaccidentespain has shared in stories, making it viral. Right now, it may be that the last units of the dough with arugula, dried tomatoes and onion are found, but they will be a few, the lucky ones to savor it for the last time.
When asked if it has been definitively withdrawn, Mercadona offers the follower a theoretically similar product: ¨in the section of refrigerated prepared dishes we have the fresh pizza base or the Margarita pizza as an alternative to a pizza no meat products¨ But this does not seem to convince the vegan public at all.
And it is that when reading the ingredients of the margarita pizza, in addition to wheat flour, tomato pulp, cherry and semi-dehydrated tomatoes, sunflower oil, yeast, water and spices, we find mozzarella cheese. Thus, not suitable for those who decide not to consume animal products or derivatives. A response that baffles the vegan public and generates laments and outrage.
We hope that Mercadona announce news in the sector and even reformulate the proposal with a vegan pizza 2.0. We will remain attentive to the case, knowing that Mercadona is one of the most complete supermarkets when it comes to food without animal products and is probably planning to further increase its catalog.
