We are three days away from the premiere of House of the Dragonthe new series of hbo max and spin-off of game of Thronesin which matt smith plays one of the main characters, Daemon Targaryens.
This show will be based on the Targaryen house and the novel Fire and Blood, written by George RR Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones universe.
The series will revolve around two characters, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryenplayed by Emma D’Arcy, and her half-brother Demonwho will star in a family conflict over the Iron Throne occupied by their deceased father, the King Viserysin the skin of Paddy Considine.
The Targaryen family has customs known to fans and readers of Martin’s works, like his closeness to dragons. But one of the most peculiar is that, by worshiping the gods of Valyria in its early days, continued the practice of incestuous marriagemarrying between brothers, cousins and brothers, uncles and nephews, in order to maintain the purity of their blood.
Matt Smith, remembered for playing Philip Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh in the Netflix series The Crown, spoke of the strange links between the Targaryensin statements quoted by the website of Red Carpet.
A complicated family dynamic
Smith, who plays Daemon, explained that the relationship between the members of the Targaryen house is much more than complicated: “Targaryens family dynamics are real and deeply complicatedyes but that’s why it’s interesting”.
“On one level, they are extremely complex, they do very extreme things. If you’ve read the book, you know what they do within the family and outside of it. They have strange bonds”, adds the 39-year-old British actor.
Matt Smith highlighted the differences between how House of Dragon approaches the family theme compared to Game of Thrones: “We can say that they are a kind of normal family and that is what we are holding on to, that thing as domestic of its nature. In that it is very different from Thrones, which was jumping through different worlds, this is a much more localized story, essentially about a couple of families”.
House of the Dragon, a 10-episode series, premieres This Sunday, August 21 at 9:00 p.m. in Chile and Venezuela, 8:00 p.m. in Colombia and Mexico, 10:00 p.m. in Argentina.
