The Marvel effect on merchandising after first impressions of Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Dr. Strange 2 will see its world premiere tomorrow, and many of the fans have already managed to leak some scenes.
Brands like Funko Pop and LEGO could see an increase in their sales after the premiere of the film, where new merchandising could be confirmed.
The first reviews and impressions of the new Marvel movie, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, have arrived..
This could benefit brands that have the licenses to produce official merchandise. Let us remember that the “Marvel effect” in brands is due to their particular marketing strategy which drives intrigue, mystery.
If we were to make a parallelism with literature, series in general could be novels, while movies could be stories; taking into account, of course, the consideration of the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar, who comments that while “the novel always wins by points, the story must win by knockout.”
Marvel understands this very well, and has built its cinematic universe on this concept, not revealing everything and when the time comes, a cliffhanger causes the audience to end up excited, eager to know “what’s next”.
This effect has a direct impact on merchandising, since on many occasions new characters or subplots are revealed which, at the same time, are used by brands such as Lego either Funko Pop! to generate more income. However, the first impressions of the film could advance this process.
First impressions of the film
Some of the first reviews that have been read on portals like Rotten Tomatos where, by the way, only by specialized critics (barely 58 comments), have generated an average acceptance rate of 84 percent:
“It is the most incredible Marvel movie ever made. Each scene is more shocking than the previous one. Marvel Studios shows that it is not afraid to push all imaginable limits. The Strange franchise is completely unleashed,” -Matt Roembke.
“Sam Raimi’s style shines throughout, with camera and editing uses I’ve never seen before. The story is surprisingly small and contained, in a good way. It’s not Avengers level, it’s a well-paced movie about Strange and Wanda.” -Jack McBryan
“Elizabeth Olsen is the MVP. What I enjoyed the most was how ambitious the film is. How she swings through obstacles and how she’s lighter on humor and she leans more toward evil. That’s where Raimi has fun”, -Erik Davis.
“#MultiverseOfMadness It’s MARVEL TO THE MAX. Sam Raimi delivers superhero horror with STUNNING visuals and magical moments fans will remember FOREVER. Cumberbatch and Olsen deliver their strongest performances in the MCU, and Xochitl is the future.” -Daniel Baptista
“Marvel Effect” in reviews of Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will boost merchandising
Marvel has become one of the most profitable businesses not only for itself, but for the licenses that distribute its merchandise. For example, lines such as Hot Wheels, Marvel Legends, a LEGO movie set, and a line of Funko Pop! toys, among many others.
Marvel has recently reaped with Spiderman No Way Home 1,892 billion US dollars. These incomes have made the investment of 4 billion dollars from Disney for all the available characters in your universe seems like an insignificant amount over the years.
With this, Marvel merchandising always gets an extra boost after the movie has been released, and the strategy mentioned at the beginning causes lines and brands to start revealing more and more sets referring to the movie, but this time with characters. and plots that, at first, were considered spoilers.
In fact, only on the official page of LEGO, some sets are from Marvel are out of print from the day of its release, while much of the film’s merchandising by Funko Pop! begins to sell out little by little in stores like Amazon. In fact, taking these two brands as an example, the best-selling Funko Pop of 2021 was “I Am Iron Man Glow”, by Eng Game; Meanwhile, the line Marvel is one of the best sellers in LEGO and one of the companies that produces the most sets per year.
For all this and more, once the film is out of theaters, we will be able to know how much money was raised only by merchandising.
