On Tiktok, a Mexican user went viral after uploading a video showing his modest home, built with tin roofs, brick walls and concrete floors.
Through the social network, the tiktoker Laura Miraflores explained that she was “tired of paying rent.” So she and her husband decided to create their own home. They moved to Ayotzingo, in the State of Mexico, and they started the project.
The Mexican shared with her followers images that show how they built the house from scratch, on an empty plot. In addition, in another publication, he proudly showed the result, and made a tour of the rooms, the bathroom, the living room and the kitchen.
“My house is made of sheet metal. Check huh. My whole house, all, all, all, all is made of sheet metal. Here I put a skylight. Get out girls, I’m going to give you a tour. This is my bedroom, six months ago I moved here to Ayotzingo, and they should have seen when I started … believe me, I don’t like my house very much, but here it is. This is my bedroom. It measures six meters. I say that there is no ugly and humble house. Poverty is one thing and filth is another ”, explained the user in a video that has accumulated more than 1,400,000 views.
In an interview with Infobae Mexico, Laura Miraflores said that it took seven months to build the house. They were very complicated times in which he suffered, cried and believed that they would not be able to finish it with the budget they had.
“With 25,000 pesos I felt that they were millions, and that I was going to have my house resanadita and everything and, well, no, it was not like that. That is why I love my home, because here the hand of God had a lot to do with it. How did we do it? I couldn’t even tell you, we just finished it. Many people supported us, ”Laura explained.
Their adventure began when their former landlady forced them out of the apartment they were renting. The family had told the landlord that they had to make a repair for a leak in the marriage room, and they asked her to deduct the arrangement from the monthly payment. The owner was upset, told them that the house was not habitable and invited them to vacate the property.
“What my husband wanted was for me to deduct it from the rent, we were going to fix it. And the lady says to us, ‘you know what? This house is not fit for you to live, so get out. ‘ And without giving you the time. And we hadn’t been there for a year or two, we had been there for almost five years. So, right off the bat ‘go’. And where? My husband was left without a job, we were in a pandemic, we didn’t have the means … ”, recalls the tiktoker.
It was then that Laura and her husband decided to invest their savings in a house of their own, from which no one could run away; a definitive home for your children to grow up safe and happy. However, the road was not easy: there were many difficulties, and they saw how money was quickly running out.
“Yes we suffered, we suffered a lot. But always in that family union, where maybe we don’t even have a craving, where we have to eat beans, eggs and rice and work from six to one in the morning. But the most important thing is to know that God helped us. […] Therefore I see my house as a paradise, because the hand of God was. Because sometimes he couldn’t reach us, and he cried and said, ‘My God, he’s not going to reach us, we don’t have …’ But the next day, God gave me light and prayed and continued, ”Laura said.
There came a point where they had no money left to meet more expenses. Their landlady was pressuring them to leave, but their new home was not yet ready. On December 21, 2020, Laura’s husband had to “improvise” the light installation so they could move in.
Today they have been living at home for six months. The property does not have a water installation, so before getting into the shower they fill a bucket to bathe. Luckily, the pipes pass through every day, so they are never out of supply. Although the house is very simple, it is hers, and that makes her immensely happy.
“The message that I wanted to convey is to say that we have to show ourselves as we are. Do not be afraid of what they will say. Humility is a fundamental part of us as people. Wanting is power. If possible. Despite the adversities, despite the fact that it may not be a good day, despite the fact that maybe I’m sad and crying, I hold on and move on. The message is that we should not be ashamed of what we have, because what we have is our effort ”.
The tiktoker told Infobae Mexico that at first many criticized his house, and laughed at the materials, the dirt patio, or the modest decoration.
“Many people scoffed. I was highly criticized in a matter of … ‘ah, no, how does your house look like this? As if I were the poorest … I believe that there is no poverty. So be your house of cardboard, paper, stone. It is your house. There is no poor house, simply and simply you have to give it the touch, know how to accommodate it, give it that cleaning ”,
He confessed that he was surprised by the good reception that the videos had on TikTok, and that he did not expect to receive so many beautiful messages through the social network.
“When I upload the house to my networks, to my Tiktok, I say, ‘it’s my house’. In other words, as if to say, then don’t make fun of it. But it is my home. I never thought that people would give so many love and that I would receive beautiful comments. If I am here on Tiktok with so many followers and many messages, it is thanks to the people and I thank them very much ”.
For her, the most important thing is that her house is clean and well cared for, and she often remembers her mother’s phrase, who always told her not to confuse “poverty with filth”. In addition, he has learned to treasure everything he has, even if it is a 10-year-old armchair.
“This house is not going to stay like this. I know that I have to work a lot with my husband to be able to fix it, fix it. This is not going to stay like that and I ask God for a lot of health, a lot of work to be able to achieve it ”.
She explained that she is a street vendor, and although the days are sometimes difficult, when she gets home all worries disappear.
“In this house you arrive and the problems that you bring from your work, from your day, you leave them outside and you say, ‘I arrived at my house, what a father’. Getting home, sitting down to have a coffee with the family is the most wonderful thing, ”he added.
