A man who went to hospital because of an insect bite was shocked when laboratory tests showed that he suffered from a terrible disease according to the medical diagnosis.
According to what was reported by local media, Joe Beckwith, 34, father of two children, residing in Morley, England, went to the hospital because in mid-October last year he suffered an insect bite and over time the small wound did not heal. On the contrary, the wound ended up becoming infected and he had to go to a hospital.
The terrible diagnosis that changed the man’s life
At St. James’s Hospital, Joe was examined by medical staff, who did blood tests to do a full scan of his health indicators. In addition, he was prescribed antibiotics to treat the infection from his bite. Without further ado, the specialists sent him to rest at his home.
While at home, the man received a phone call from the hospital where the tests they did showed that his white blood cell count was abnormal. Thus, the father of the family was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
What is the treatment to follow for acute myeloid leukemia?
According to information from the American Cancer Society, Chemotherapy is the main treatment for most types of AML, sometimes along with a targeted therapy drug.
This treatment may be followed by a stem cell transplant. Other drugs (in addition to standard chemotherapy drugs) may be used to treat people with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Surgery and radiation therapy are not the main treatments for AML, but they may be used in special circumstances.
