The decrease occurred despite the fact that the country is experiencing high inflation. In the morning, Inegi released the indicator, which stood at 7.58% during the first half of April, more than double the Bank of Mexico’s goal (3% +/-1%).
Coneval explained that the factors behind this improvement were the 6.7% increase in real labor income per capita, which went from 2,671.44 to 2,850.25 pesos, as well as the number of employed people of 3.1 million.
Although the improvement was in all the areas measured by the Council, the data show that the gap between rural and urban poverty is still wide.
51.9% of people living in rural areas do not have enough income to buy basic food such as corn, wheat, rice, beef and veal, chicken, milk, cheese, eggs, fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes, and non-alcoholic beverages.
On the other hand, in the urban area, working poverty affects 34.7% of the population whose income does not cover them to pay for the basket.
This phenomenon is also more vicious with women than with men, since the difference is 43.4% against 37%.
