- So far, more than 26,000 cases of monkeypox and four deaths have been reported worldwide.
- It is still too early to identify the possible consequences of monkeypox, but it is estimated that the main ones would be skin scars and mental health effects.
- Some specialists fear that prejudices caused by HIV in the past will be repeated.
The appearance of new diseases always causes concern because their consequences are unknown. But there are also others like monkeypox that have existed for decades but have never been studied and therefore the consequences they can cause are not known with certainty.
In this sense, the first human case was reported more than half a century ago in Africa, but it was a problem that was always underestimated. The main reason was because it did not expand to other territories and most pharmaceutical companies considered that it was a minor issue.
As a result of the above, the Jynneos vaccine was the only one that was developed. While to date there are no specific drugs for patient care. For this reason, the only option for infected people is to attack their main symptoms.
The largest monkeypox outbreak in history
It was until this 2022 that the largest outbreak in the history of this disease was generated. So far it has spread to more than 80 countries and every day it reaches new territories. But now the main question is about the consequences that monkeypox can leave in survivors.
Based on the official count of the World Health Organization (WHO), little has been reported more than 26 thousand cases and only four deaths. The mortality rate is extremely low but it does not mean that after the disease is overcome it does not leave consequences.
sequelae of monkeypox
At the moment it is still too early to say whether it can cause sequelae or not because more time is still required to monitor what happens to patients. Although according to some dermatologists it is quite likely that the most severe cases do develop scars on the skin that remain for life.
On the other hand, the mental health would be one of the most affected. In fact, since then, stigmas have been created against patients because most cases occur in homosexuals and bisexuals.
With the above in mind, some specialists agree that a scenario quite similar to the one that occurred with HIV during the 1980s and 1990s could be repeated. At that time there were thousands of cases of discrimination, although now it is known that it is a disease that anyone can develop.
For now, it is worth remembering that the most recent count indicates that there are 148 cases of monkeypox in Mexico. At the moment it is not an endemic disease in our country, so transmission is mainly through close contact (including sexual intercourse) with infected people during their period of contagion or through contaminated objects (clothes, bedding, towels and other ).
