This Monday the Foundation Human Rights Campaign (HRCF) presented the sixth annual edition of HRC Equidad MX: Global Labor Equity Programa survey that evaluates the inclusion LGBTQ+ within the main Mexican companies and multinationals.
In this sense, 252 companies were certified and the participation of 298 companies was recognized, achieving 14% more compared to the total of 262 last year and more than 900% in contrast to the first edition, which had a total of 32 companies.
For their part, Mexican firms also rose positively, increasing from 71 to 94, achieving a participation of 32% of the total Index.
Likewise, there was a base of 38 different productive sectors and an increase in regional distribution within Mexico, by increasing the participation of companies with headquarters in 20 states of the Mexican Republic, against 16 last year.
Thanks to the growth in the number of participating companies, the number of people potentially benefiting from this inclusion program in Mexico increased to more than 1.4 million, which represented a growth of 15 percent.
“Inclusive workplaces increase engagement and productivity, lift up disadvantaged communities, and help a company’s bottom line. Everyone wins – LGBTQ+ people, our co-workers and customers – when employers work to promote policies and practices centered on LGBTQ+ inclusion and belonging,” said RaShawn Hawkins, Director of the HRC Foundation Workplace Equity Program.
How do companies achieve certification?
In order for the HRC Foundation to accredit them, companies must meet some requirements, among which are: adoption of non-discrimination policies, diversity and inclusion councils or ERGs, public visibility actions and LGBTQ+ public engagement.
However, as part of the accreditation in this sixth edition, the program included training in LGBTQ+ matters as a requirement.
In this way, among the 252 companies certified this year, 119 of them reached the maximum score in more than two of the countries where the HRC Foundation has this certification.
Companies like Accor Mexico, Atento Mexico, El Palacio de Hierro; Mijares, Angoitia, Cortes y Fuentes, SkyAlert, and The Walt Disney Company Mexico, among others, were part of the new companies.
There are also those that have consecutively maintained their good practices with the LGBTQ+ community. Among them are CEMEX, Genomma Lab Internacional, IFT, INE, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) and others.
“This year’s results are truly inspiring. The growing number of companies committed to promoting LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices in Mexico indicates that more and more corporate leaders understand and value the equity and benefits of inclusive workplaces. We continue to see growth: 32% of the participants this year are Mexican companies”, commented Fernando Velázquez, implementing partner of HRC Equidad MX.
