Audi, Porsche and now Lamborghini. The Volkswagen Group has opted for the new category LMDh at the time of channeling the sports programs in resistance of its main brands. Although there is still no official communication, the latest information speaks of an imminent announcement, a movement that will make Lamborghini the sixth manufacturer to commit to the LMDh category. As we reported on Motor.es, the Lamborghini Squadra Corse project will have a ‘racing-customer’ character. In addition, the deadlines are also different from those used by Audi and Porsche, since Lamborghini focuses on the 2024 season of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Lamborghini will thus join Audi, Porsche, BMW and Acura within the LMDh category, brands that have already announced their projects within the category. What’s more, Cadillac is also about to confirm its program, a movement that could well take place in the framework of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Lamborghini too will join forces with Multimatic at the time of designing the chassis of its prototype and will use the technical basis that the other two brands of the Volkswagen Group will offer to have an LMDh with its logo with a reasonably low investment. Hence the marked ‘careers-client’ character of the project.
Speaking to RACER, Chris Ward as head of the Lamborghini racing department, he assured: «We are not 100% sure, but if I said that we are 90% of the way, it would be quite accurate and I would not lie. We have yet to reach a couple of targets and come to an agreement with a couple of major suppliers. That is what has separated us from many manufacturers on other projects. Our aim is not to participate with a factory effort like Porsche or other brands. To be there, the effort of the clients will be necessary. We have a wide variety of equipment, but we are working on aligning things before».
