But what is alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune disorder that causes large patchy hair loss. Sometimes, hair loss is very extreme and results in baldness. It can happen to anyone regardless of gender. It is found in one in five people. The disease is not contagious and does not make people sick, but it does hurt them emotionally.
Treatment
There is no medical care for alopecia areata, it is said that there are some forms of care suggested by doctors to help hair grow back quickly. The corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs which are said to suppress the immune system but cannot stop new bald patches from forming.
Causes
It occurs when white blood cells attack hair follicles, causing severe hair loss and slowing down hair production. Scientists are not sure of the main cause of alopecia areata. Genetics are said to be involved in the disease. The person is more likely to get the disease when he has a close relative who suffers from the same.
Symptoms
The most visible symptom of alopecia areata is patchy hair loss. Hair not only sprouts from the scalp, but can also be seen falling from eyelashes, beards, and mustaches.
