- The increase in raw materials pushes companies to price adjustments.
- The increases in raw materials began with the pandemic, but were aggravated by the war in eastern Europe.
- Coca-Cola Femsa sent new price lists to stores.
Inflation is hitting the economy of all countries and Mexico is no exception.
In this scenario of pressure on prices, Coca-Cola Femsa sent grocery stores a new list that will be effective from Sunday, June 5, 2022.
The increases are around 6 percenta percentage that, in most cases, translates into increases in between one and two pesos per product.
The price change affects the brands that the distributor is in charge of, such as all presentations of Coca Cola, Topo Chico mineral water, Ciel water, Del Valle juices and others.
It also affects sports drink Powerade and energy drink Monster, both owned by the Atlanta-based soft drink giant.
The increase has to do with inflation in the values of raw materials, something that has already been seen throughout the world since the end of the pandemic, but which it was aggravated by the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The new list has already been distributed among businesses in Mexico and the current values will be valid until Saturday, June 4.
According to what different media publish, the increase seeks to compensate, in part, for the rise in the prices of raw materials such as PET and sweeteners, which have suffered increases of more than 50 percent since the beginning of 2022.
The sale value of the 600 ml Coca-Cola, for example, will go from 15 to 16 pesos, while the one-liter bottle will go from 22 to 23 pesos.
Other reference values from June 5 published in Femsa’s new price list are the flavored Ciel water of 600 ml (13 pesos), Topo Chico of 1.5 liters (26 pesos), Powerade of 600 ml (21 pesos ) and the 473 can of Monster (37 pesos).
According to a statement from the National Alliance of Small Businesses (Anpec), in some states there have already been increases and in others, due to high demand for heat, there was a shortage of some specific products.
Inflation in Mexico: a global problem
It must be remembered that at the beginning of May, the federal government in charge of Andrés Manuel López Obrador launched a plan to control inflation in Mexico.
Among the initiatives, the setting of maximum reference prices is promoted to avoid a massive increase.
Inflation in Mexico has reached record highs in recent months. In April, the year-on-year price rise was 7.72 percent, with a high incidence of oils (7.5 percent), meats (6.5 percent) and dairy products (2.8 percent).
