Julio Scherer Ibarra resigned from the Legal Counsel of the Presidency of the Republic this Tuesday, sources close to a meeting between collaborators that takes place in the National Palace confirmed.
However, a few hours after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador delivers his Third Government Report, sources consulted indicate that the head of the federal Executive has not yet decided whether to accept the departure of Scherer Ibarra.
The lawyer is one of the political figures closest to the president and accompanied him for just under three years in his tenure.
The son of the renowned journalist Julio Scherer García, was in charge, together with the former Secretary of the Interior, Olga Sánchez Cordero, the preparation of an amnesty decree to free prisoners who had not received a sentence, an action that could benefit up to 94 one thousand people deprived of liberty.
However, it has not been reported whether the text was finalized by both officials before leaving their orders.
Scherer Ibarra’s management was also marked by the controversial initiatives that the federal president defended in court, such as the reform of the electricity industry law and the national register of mobile phone users, which is being held by various judicial instances.
One of the most recent scandals in which the legal advisor was involved was based on his statements made on Carmen Aristegui’s radio program where he suggested shutting up the reporters who ask President López Obrador about the electoral process.
Given these comments, the federal president considered his statements unfortunate, but welcomed the fact that he apologized.
In 2018, Julio Scherer Ibarra was López Obrador’s campaign coordinator in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
