The Italian data protection watchdog has announced that it is temporarily blocking the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot and opening an investigation for alleged breaches of data privacy regulations.
The data protection agency has ordered the immediate limitation of the data processing of Italian users by OpenAI, the American company behind ChatGPT. The agency noted that this was a response to the recent data breach suffered by the AI platform on March 20.
We believe the number of users whose data was actually revealed to someone else is extremely low and we have contacted those who might be impacted. We take this very seriously and are sharing details of our investigation and plan here. 2/2 https://t.co/JwjfbcHr3g

In addition, the Italian data watchdog also claimed that there is a lack of information for users regarding the data collected by OpenAI. In addition, the agency noted that there is a lack of legal basis justifying the massive collection and storage of personal data by the AI while it was training its algorithms. The agency also pointed out that the information provided by the AI chatbot does not always reflect real data and determined that there may be inaccuracies in terms of personal data processing.
Apart from this, the Italian data watchdog also highlighted a possible breach of ChatGPT’s own data protection rules. According to the agency, although ChatGPT limits its use only to those over 13 years of age, there is no filter that verifies the age of the user within the application. This means that children could be exposed to responses that are inappropriate for their developing minds.
Aside from Italy, AI chatbots are also facing criticism from other parts of the world. On March 31, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy (CAIDP) filed a complaint against ChatGPT, seeking to stop the release of powerful AI systems to the masses. The CAIDP described the chatbot as a “biased” and “misleading” platform that poses a risk to public safety and privacy.
