One of the most feared witnesses on the dashboard of a vehicle is the MIL. It can indicate many things, but what is certain is that it will not allow you to pass the ITV if your car was registered in 2008 or later years.
The technical inspection of vehicles, which we all know as ITV, is becoming more and more restrictive. Not in vain, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) considers that many of the accidents that occur on the roads are related to poor condition or maintenance of the vehicles that circulate on them.
ITV was done mandatory in Spain in 1987 and, since then, the tests that the operators carry out to check the condition of the vehicles are increasingly exhaustive.
Witness MIL
One of the failures that ITV considers the most serious today is the appearance of the MIL warning light on the dashboard. Its meaning is Malfunction Indicator Light and determines an indeterminate engine failure.
It is yellow and, if you try to pass the ITV with it and your car was enrolled in 2008 or later yearsyou must know that you will not pass it.
In addition, one of the latest modifications that have been introduced is the electronic monitoring of the condition of the vehicle through the OBD diagnostic system.
With this device, it is possible to determine the faults present in it, even if they are not visible on the control panel. That is to say, it will not be worth anything to mask it, since the OBD will indicate that the fault is present and it will be considered a serious defect.
The MIL witness will make the inspection unfavorable, forcing you to drive just to take the car to a workshop and having to return to ITV in less than two months.
If you dont do it, the fine will be 200 eurosbut there are more fines related to ITV that you should know:
- Circular with the expired ITV: 200 euros
- Circular with negative ITV: 500 euros
- Driving without the ITV sticker (even if it is favourable): 80 euros.
- Circular with a false ITV sticker: up to 720 euros
