There is no doubt that the death of a pet is very difficult to overcome, not only because they are charming, but because they are like another member of the family, therefore, it is important to know how to react and even more when there are children affected by the complicated situation.
As adults we are more aware of what happens, however, for children, it is something very complex to assimilate, that is why we must take into account the following information to not allow them to fall into depression.
1. – Take into account that the smallest of the house are the most affected by this loss, so we should not leave them alone and it is our duty to be attentive to their emotional state.
2.- If the little one still does not know the news, we should try to tell them in a place where they are alone, where they feel safe and comfortable so that there are no distractions.
3.- As we would do with any complicated subject, we must find out how much information is necessary for children, according to their age, level of maturity and life experience.
4.- If our pet is already very old or has a persistent disease, let’s consider talking to the children before they die.
If there is no other choice but to sacrifice the animal, we can use phrases like these:
- vets have done everything possible to save him
- the pet will never get better and will continue to suffer
- is the most compassionate way to relieve pet pain
- the pet will die in peace, without feeling pain or fear
- It is very important to always tell the truth, there are ways to explain to children, hiding reality can be more painful.
- On the other hand, we must help the little ones to cope with the situation so that they can get ahead, with activities that distract their minds from positive things.
- Trying to substitute with another pet is not highly recommended, as the memory remains latent and could generate confusion or negative feelings.
