Despite the fact that Intel is one of the most recognized and important technology firms in the industry, in recent years manufacturers such as AMD, Nvidia, Qualcomm and Apple have made things difficult for the North American firm.
In addition to AMD creating processors that outperform Intel, the company has had several run-ins with business partners like Apple.
The Cupertino-based firm canceled the contract with Intel to supply the 5G antennas for the 2020 iPhones, and has also announced that in the coming years all its laptops will stop using Intel chips to include their own processors based on ARM architecture.
In its official statement, the company mentions that they have made an effort in their 7-nanometer technology for their processors, however, these have not hit the market yet, and it is expected that they will arrive at least later this year or sometime in the future. 2022, but its direct competitor, AMD, already has several chips with this technology for sale.
Pat Gelsinger: the former engineer of the company who will lead the new stage of Intel
The company mentions that Gelsinger is a highly respected CEO and veteran of the technology industry. Gelsinger is a former CEO of VMWare and was previously CTO (chief technology officer) of Intel, in fact, he worked for 30 years at this company and was one of its first directors.
In this regard, Gelsinger mentioned, “I am delighted to rejoin and lead Intel at this very important time for the company. It is a privilege and honor to return in this leadership capacity. I have enormous respect for the rich history of the company and the powerful technologies that have created the world’s digital infrastructure. ”
Gelsinger will assume his position as of February 15. Unlike the current CEO, Bob Swan, who has a profile and education focused on management and economics, Gelsinger has a more technical profile. In fact, during his time at Intel he was responsible for the development of the iconic Core and Xeon processor families.
