The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) restructures its teaching and research programs so that the work of the new generations of doctors is focused on ethics and social welfare. This was stated by its general director Eduardo Lazcano Ponce, during the master conference “Curriculum renewal in public health postgraduate courses”.
He added that the INSP is the National Institute of Health with the highest scientific productivity in our country. From 1987 to 2021 3,500 health professionals graduated and generated more than 6,000 academic products.
Proposed new changes
The new programs promote human and ethical values in students, researchers and teachers so that the exercise of their profession and the development of research are grounded with the purpose of contribute to social justice, avoid exclusion and racism.
In the virtual presentation given to members of the Mexican Association of Faculties and Schools of Medicine (AMFEM), specified that the sense of institutional renewal strengthens functions, links with different health agencies and educational institutions and makes academic practice more effective to contribute to social welfare and community links, with a social and gender perspective.
The ethical principles that all doctors must have
The academic restructuring is based on 12 ethical principles of public health practice: the imperative need to instill values; prioritize the prevention of adverse events; promote community health without affecting individual rights; implement and evaluate actions with input from the community; promote equity and universal coverage; design effective evidence-based policies and programs; and obtain community consent.
Also, promote timely interventions based on knowledge; respect the heterogeneity in values, beliefs and cultures; implement programs and policies to improve the physical and social environment; protect the confidentiality of information; guarantee the professional competence of human resources and increase inter-institutional collaborations, explained the researcher in Medical Sciences.
The new model of the INSP will offer students who are preparing there, new opportunities to obtain academic degrees, two simultaneous degrees, postgraduate degrees and specialization in various areas.
Lazcano Ponce stressed that, as a leader in teaching and research, the INSP is a strategic ally in the development of joint programs in public health. In this context, he said that a collaboration agreement was signed with the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt), to launch new models of professional training and research in public health that benefit the community.
