Famous TikTok influencer Chris Olsen, 25, told a funny story on social media about going for a routine STI test, during which he revealed that he had tested positive for chlamydia three times in the past.

“So I’ve had chlamydia three times – let’s end the stigma,” Olsen begins the video jokingly, referring to the treatable STD that is the most frequently reported bacterial infectious disease in the United States, according to the CDC. Next, the famous social media influencer who has admitted having chlamydia on more than one occasion, who identifies as gay, tells how the nurse who was drawing blood from him on his last visit tried to match him up with her gay son.

Responses to the video have been mixed, with many commenting praising Olsen’s bravery in speaking openly about her STD story without adding the stigma, shame and fear that so often accompany come-out stories.

How common are STDs?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sexually transmitted diseases are common, especially in young people. Each year there are about 20 million new cases of STDs in the United States. About half of these infections occur in people between the ages of 15 and 24.

The truth is that sexually transmitted infections are quite common: the CDC estimates that 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with a positive STD in their lifetime. Meanwhile, positive cases reached an all-time high for the sixth consecutive year in 2019, with more than 2.5 million reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis reported that year.
