“We do not know precisely which inputs are those that they consider to have become more expensive. We ask in general about the inputs, which can be due to a large number of things”, explained Arturo Blancas, general director of economic statistics at Inegi, during the presentation of the timely results.
Last week, Fernando Cruz, partner of the Consulting Group of Agricultural Markets (GCMA), commented that the production costs in the field increased about 130% last year.
As far as insecurity is concerned, added the president of the institute, Graciela Márquez, insecurity is in fifth place among the factors that affected agricultural production.
“Surely when we disaggregate we will be able to see the distribution and a different composition when we have the final results,” said Márquez.
The agricultural production units (4.4 million) had 20.5 million hectares planted, out of a total of 26.1 million hectares, and 5.6 million not planted.
The institute detailed that 2.6 million hectares corresponded to fallow surface due to issues such as crop rotation, among others, and 2.9 million due to bad weather, lack of credit, illness; as well as for lack of money or support or because there was no one to sow.
The information gathering was carried out between September and November of last year, and the final results of the census will be released next November, Inegi reported in a statement.
The last Agricultural Census was carried out 15 years ago. The Inegi authorities explained this situation to the lack of resources. “We will insist that this census will have to be carried out in accordance with international practices -every five years-“, commented Graciela Márquez.
“The budget for the year 2022 was 2,700 million pesos (for this census). Every time we have an uprising, like the five economic ones next year, we petition the Chamber of Deputies,” he added.
