Today, storage is cheaper than ever. We can have Backups in all types of media, whether in internal, external hard drives, on a NAS, or in the multiple cloud storage services. However, there are those who do not take precautions when having backup copies and run the risk of losing information by having it stored only in one place.
That’s what happened to the music group Wizard of Oz, which announced a few days ago that it had lost the video clip of the new song «The lady of the sea«. The video clip was to be released on September 5 at 11:58 p.m., but last day 3 they announced that they were not going to be able to launch it.
The fault, apparently, was the hard drive on which they had stored it, which it has failed. After try to recover the data for several days, they have only been able recover slightly less than 30%. As a consequence, they have had to publish a lyric video with the lyrics because they have not had time to record the video again in such a short space of time. In just a day and a half, the song has already more than 210,000 reproductions.
There are cheap alternatives to prevent this from happening
It is in these types of situations, when you spoil a days job worth thousands of euros, when having backup copies on other hard drives or in the cloud seems very cheap. In this case, having copies on other media would have been the logical thing to do, and surely, after the event, they will not hesitate to do so. Warner Music is a huge company, but even among large companies the fact of having backup copies is despised, despite the fact that this can make you lose more money than it costs to have a backup system in the company itself or in the cloud.
In fact, one of the best ways to secure low-cost cloud backups is to use services like Backblaze, which for $ 70 a year allows companies to have unlimited storage, while for individuals you only have to pay $ 7 a month and you can upload things without limit from the same computer.
Hard drives and SSDs fail, and the ideal is to always have at least two backup copies of our files: one in another non-primary device, such as an external hard drive or a NAS, and another in some cloud storage. Thanks to this, if, for example, the house is burned, there will always be copies in the cloud, and if the cloud service loses the files (if a catastrophe like OVH happens), we have local copies at home.
