Throughout the current health emergency, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) has collaborated in the recovery of more than one million infected patients. One of the keys to achieving this was the hospital reconversion which was implemented since the middle of last year. In addition, a historic agreement was also reached with private hospitals to treat illnesses and problems unrelated to Covid-19. Although one of the achievements that has been most presumed is that care has never been denied to people with symptoms or infected.
Since then, more than a year has passed and now Mexico faces one of the most severe moments of the pandemic. The third wave has shown a lower mortality rate but in infections it is about to exceed the previous two.
The credibility of the IMSS at risk
In this sense, a serious incident has now been revealed that puts the credibility of the IMSS at risk. It all stems from the fact that a person with Covid-19 symptoms was apparently denied care. The consequence is that a few minutes later he died outside a hospital.
Based on what was published by The universal, the victim was a 61-year-old man. He was taken by his relatives to Hospital General de Zona (HGZ) No. 1-A “Dr. Rodolfo Antonio de Varios Macías ”from Mexico City to receive attention. What is mentioned is that he presented symptoms related to this new disease.
When he arrived in the vicinity of the property, he began to present serious health problems. It is indicated that he had severe chest pain and passed out a few meters from the entrance.
IMSS lacks basic elements
At that moment, the hospital’s health workers were immediately asked for help and a nurse immediately came out to carry out a review. The main drawback is that a stretcher or wheelchair was requested to be able to enter it and receive the full service. Unfortunately that was not possible because the IMSS did not have available inputs. Even Milenio shared a video in which this moment is observed.
During that period, valuable minutes were lost, which were decisive. In the end, the patient had to be carried by several people to be admitted to the emergency area. Although unfortunately 15 minutes later the relatives were informed that he had died.
Faced with this situation, a dilemma has arisen. On the one hand, the companions accuse the IMSS of not providing care on time. The outrage lies in the lack of essentials such as stretchers and wheelchairs, especially in these times of pandemic.
While on the other hand, the medical staff who treated the patient assures that from the first moment he was checked outside the hospital, he no longer showed vital signs. Therefore, it is indicated that he died moments before arriving at the property.
For now, what has not yet been explained is the reason for the death. It remains to be reviewed if the fatal incident was really caused by Covid-19 or if it was another cause that led to the fatal end.
