For any disease, punctual follow-up of medical treatment is essential. It is an essential requirement, although it is not the only one. The emotional part should also be considered to achieve a better result. When both are met, it is always better for the patient. With this in mind, they were delivered toys to children with cancer to strengthen their recovery from this serious disease.
This gesture was made by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), in coordination with the IMSS Volunteers, on the occasion of Children’s Day, which is commemorated every April 30. The last two years were too complicated because physical contact was eliminated due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but now everything is starting to return to normal.
Noble gesture to show empathetic treatment with patients
delivery of toys to children with cancer undergoing treatment It began in various High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) in Mexico City, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Puebla, Veracruz and Yucatán.
Specifically, this activity began at the Hospital de Especialidades de Puebla, and is also carried out simultaneously at the Hospital General de La Raza, in Mexico City. Other units were the Gynecology and Pediatrics Hospital of León, Guanajuato; Pediatric Hospital of the Western Medical Center; Specialty Hospital No. 25 in Nuevo León. Also the Specialty Hospital No. 14 of the “Adolfo Ruiz Cortines” National Medical Center, in Veracruz; and the UMAE “Ignacio García Téllez”, in Mérida, Yucatán.
The event held at the UMAE in the state of Puebla was led by Dr. Célida Duque Molina, head of the Directorate of Medical Benefits (DPM), and Dr. Alejandra Aburto Sánchez, honorary president of IMSS Volunteering; Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, coordinator of Oncology Care; and Dr. Aida Barrios Reyes, head of Pediatrics at the Puebla Specialty Hospital.
During her participation, Dr. Duque Molina highlighted that daily actions are carried out in favor of the pediatric oncology patientssuch as frequent visits to care centers and meetings that take place every Wednesday afternoon with mothers and fathers from all over the country who have minors undergoing cancer treatment.
He pointed out that the reason for the visit to Puebla had three aspects: the delivery of toys, the final review of the care processes with the supervision team of the Coordination of Highly Specialized Medical Units and the formalization of an agreement that works with the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt) to have a National Reference Center that improves the opportunity in the diagnosis and initiation of treatment of minors with leukemia.
Other actions in favor of children with cancer
Dr. Duque Molina highlighted that medical personnel commonly focus their efforts on improving care, updating Clinical Practice Guidelines, references, timeliness and quality of cancer care, and implementing programs such as The Golden Hour.
“But it is always important to invest in what also characterizes us, which is humanism, which I am sure is one of the pillars of care in this hospital and part of it is to carry out this toy delivery activity that comforts our hearts and minds. soul”.
For her part, Dr. Alejandra Aburto Sánchez affirmed that it is an honor to receive the invitation to participate in the program You are magic, “which is so beautiful, fruitful and necessary for our beneficiaries.”
He thanked the medical authorities of the Social Security central offices and of Puebla for carrying out the delivery of toys to one of the most vulnerable populations, such as girls and boys; “This is done for them, giving them pajamas, a pillow and their gift, is something very important for them that always encourages them in the most critical moments of cancer treatment.”
Dr. Aburto Sánchez added that the program “You are magic”, of the IMSS Volunteers, has evolved and continues to bring joy to beneficiaries through the work of the volunteers who seek to contribute to improve their well-being.
