After numerous rumors and leaks, a few months ago Warner Bros confirmed the existence of MultiVersus, a fighting game that will hit the market to try to become a game among fighting games similar to the well-known Super Smash Bros, betting on a crossover with the characters most important of the Warner universe. Last Monday we had the opportunity to attend an event that was attended by some of the members of Player First Games, the studio in charge of developing the title, where they told us a little about the game’s approach to later give us the opportunity to play the same. For that very reason, from SomosXbox we bring you our impressions of MultiVersus.
To the fight against a titan
As we have mentioned, MultiVersus is a fighting game that is inspired by the well-known Nintendo franchise, where we can match up to four characters on the screen, with a very simple objective: kick our rival/s off the track. As in this type of game, our characters will have a damage counter, and the higher the number above them, the easier it will be for our opponents to throw us off the track.
As expected, the title will offer us different game modes. On the one hand, we will have the classic 2 vs 2 mode, where we will have to pair up with another player to try to beat the opposing team. However, individual options are also present, since we can also face each other in 1 vs 1 fights, or even a free for all to 4 players, this being the most frenetic mode available in the title. In addition, we will have the possibility of create custom gameswhere we can modify scenarios, modality, duration of the game or even the option of whether or not objects appear throughout the fight.
Five minutes of MultiVersus gameplay leaked
The games that we have been able to play these days have worked perfectly, something for which the use of the Netcode of the title has been essential. In the presentation they told us that the title would have this technology that would guarantee the proper functioning of online fights. Furthermore, it is important to note that the game will feature crossplay among all its platforms, which will be Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC.
It is logical to think that all this is available in a multiplayer aspect, but the people of Warner Bros have also thought of those users who want to play against the AI, offering the possibility that we take games against bots in all the modalities mentioned above. This inclusion is really important, since in these games we will also earn points that will be necessary to advance in the battle pass.
Precisely, this battle pass will be one of the cornerstones of the title. As it is a free to play game, the use of this model becomes essential for the interests of Warner Bros. There will be two types of battle pass: the basic and the premium. In both we will be unlocking elements such as icons for our profile, coins, skins or expulsion visual effects, among other things. However, as is logical, the rewards of the Premium version will be better and much more numerous than those of the basic version.
A varied template
In our tests, the MultiVersus roster consists of 15 fighters, although it is a somewhat misleading figure. When we start playing the title, we will not have all the characters unlocked, but we will have a total of 9 characters at our disposal. And how do we unlock the characters? Playing and earning coins. The first character that we will be able to unlock will be Wonder Woman, whose only requirement will be to overcome the initial tutorial of the game.
However, to unlock the rest of the characters it will be necessary for us to play several games, since we will have to buy them with the game money. Once we win games, we will get these coins, of which we will need 2,000 to unlock each of the 5 characters that are available when we start playing.
Entering to analyze the squad, although it is true that there are many characters left in the pipeline, it seems to us that a good selection has been made. Taking advantage of the meme that has been in force for years, the people of Player First Games have introduced Saggy in his “Saiyan” version, imitating more characteristic movements of Dragon Ball. In addition, we have other classic characters from the label such as Bugs Bunny, Superman, Batman or Arya Stark, among others.
Although there could be a fear that the characters were identical, the truth is that each one feels very different, even if they share elements with other characters. This is also due to the classes that are available, since MultiVersus will offer us 5 different types of characters: Thug, Tank, Mage, Support and Assassin. All of them have a specific role, and as they told us at the event, the synergy between characters will be an element to take into account in the face of 2 VS 2 games. For example, there are support characters that are capable of bringing us closer to his position, something that can be differential if we find ourselves in an aerial fight offstage.
We will have to see how the title unfolds after many hours, but the truth is that what we have been able to play has been a lot of fun. In this sense, the new characters that they add in the future will also be important, since, although having 15 characters may be correct for the launch, this type of game needs new members to give it a boost from time to time.
Cartoon
The graphic style of MultiVersus is committed to offering us a completely cartoon appearance, which fits perfectly with characters from franchises like the Looney Toons. However, that does not mean that other characters from other franchises do not have a good recreation, since characters like Wonder Woman or Batman have a design that works very well with what we see on screen.
Although it is true that we are not facing a graphic exponent, the truth is that the title unfolds very well, with a correct color palette and with some scenarios that, except for some specific ones, enter the eyes very well. In addition, the performance of the title has been unbeatable, being able to enjoy games at 4K 60fps with a PC that has hardware that is already a few years old.
Finally, it should be noted that the game comes with texts translated into Spanish, although the sounds in this beta are completely in English. Finally, it has a soundtrack that, although it will not revolutionize anything, is quite melodic and gives us the feeling of being a mixture of some sounds from the most outstanding Warner franchises.
