The distance at which the monitor will be from your eyes and its resolution is something to take into account.
If it is already difficult to choose one type of panel or another when buying a gaming monitor, especially if you do not know very well the differences between an IPS, TN and VA, then there is the issue of size. The latter is more complicated than it seems. Bigger is not always betterespecially you will have it very close.
When buying a monitor, be it gaming or not, let’s say that keep a balance between inches and viewing distance. In some cases, a monitor may come that has a curved panel, especially in those models that are ultrawide, so you don’t have to turn your head so much. But how to choose the size of a gaming monitor? Let’s look at some tips.
Choosing the size of a gaming monitor
If we take a look at the steam stats we could say that most PC gamers have a 24 or 27 inch monitor, at least at the time of this writing. Reaching this conclusion is very easy if we take into account that 67.24% play at 1080p (March 2022), and almost all the monitors of the inches that I just mentioned are usually Full HD. Now, it is also true that we can find 27-inch monitors that are 1440p and 2160p.
In the BenQ website There is a very interesting article where they explain what size the monitor should be based on the distance it will be from your eyes. However, you also have to take into account the resolution and pixel density. If you take a look at the table you will see that a 24-inch 1080p monitor has to be a little further away than a 27-inch 1440p monitor. This is because of the pixel density. If we put both monitors at the same distance, the pixels are appreciated more on the 24-inch 1080p monitor (91.79 dpi vs 108.79 dpi).
size and resolution | recommended distance |
---|---|
24 inches (1080p) | 98 centimeters |
24 inches (1440p) | Between 70 and 98 centimeters |
27 inches (1080p) | Between 104 and 109 centimeters |
27 inches (1440p) | Between 79 and 109 centimeters |
27 inches (2160p) | Between 52 and 109 centimeters |
32 inches (1440p) | Between 98 and 131 centimeters |
32 inches (2160p) | Between 70 and 131 centimeters |
As you can see, this is not an exact science. Not all of us see exactly the same or have the same field of vision, although on the latter, the average of a person who sees well is 140 degrees. However, using the same monitor, it is not uncommon for two people to have to place it at different distanceshence in the table we see that there is a certain margin when we talk about the recommended distance.
How to know what the perfect distance is
There is a test that you can carry out to know how far you have to put the monitor. You have to keep moving it until the entire surface of the screen fits into your field of vision and you do not have to make any effort to see what is on the screen. If, on the other hand, you have to constantly turn your head and try to focus to see correctly, then you are very close. If at all times you have to bend over and squint to try to see properly, then the monitor is too far away and you have to bring it closer.
As you can see, it is a very simple test. So, when you don’t have to turn your head or strain your eyes to see all the details, then that’s when you have the monitor at the right distance.
