Autumn is here. And it is not necessary for the shopping centers to tell us. You just have to look at the trees and that we finally have to put on a blanket to see our favorite movie. It is the most photogenic station of all and with the help of Adobe Photoshop we will get the best possible colors.
Autumn is a perfect month except that the days are getting shorter and shorter. From a photographic point of view it is much more grateful than summer, to give just one example. But many times we have problems when it comes to representing colors with the hue and saturation we are looking for.
You have to take into account many things to achieve this. It does not matter if you shoot with a mobile or one without a mirror. And although it may seem absurd to many, it is important to always shoot in RAW format. It can be said that it is the best advice we can give to start and finish. Everything changes from this moment on.

Shoot RAW in the fall
The information in a RAW file allows you to record all the tonal information of an autumn forest. If you want to hang out, you can try to count all the colors that you can see in an Asturian forest on these dates. The last time I did it on a cloudy day I hit 25 shades.
All this information is difficult to record in a jpeg with a reduced color space, such as sRGB. The trick is that the colors come out more saturated on the screen, but nuances are lost, especially when developing or printing.
The problem that many students tell me is that the files appear much duller and less saturated. AND it’s not a problem, it’s a virtue. So we have all the information possible to achieve the best possible representation.
Can we not take good pictures then if our mobile only shoots in jpeg? Of course yes, but technical quality will leave much to be desired. And that despite using a thousand filters. The technical result will not be so good.
Four Development Techniques to Enhance Fall Tones
It is a classic to recommend one or another technique during these dates. Here we are going to see the most recommended ones starting from the RAW file that we have talked about. We will consult the proposals of f64 Academy and Digital Photographer to enrich the article.
Modify Color Temperature
The simplest thing is always what we proposed in an article two years ago. And it’s as simple as changing the Color temperature in Adobe Camera RAW:
- We develop the photo following the ten steps of development or any other workflow that convinces you.
- If we follow the decalogue, the key is to change the Color temperature in step number 5.
- At this point we have to bet on a warmer temperature, the one that offers Shadow or Cloudy.
Adjust the Calibration panel
In f64 they propose to take advantage of the Advantages of the Unknown Calibration panel that we find in Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom.
It is a finer technique than the previous one because it allows you to play with the color channels separately and does not force you to modify the entire white balance in the photograph.
- We open the panel Calibration that we find in both programs.
- We have two parameters for each Color Channel: Tone and Saturation.
- The secret is to adjust each of the parameters until you find the best combination.
The HSL / Color tab
This is another of the methods proposed by f64. It is very similar to the previous one and takes advantage of all the virtues of the new panel of these two programs.
- After developing the photograph we open the HSL / Color tab.
- Here we have to mark the color that we want to modify and adjust the three color values: Tone, Saturation and Brightness.
- For an autumn photograph, you just need to touch the warm ones (oranges, yellows and reds) to get a good effect.
The Magic of the Color Query Adjustment Layer
This is one of my favorite methods and one that I always repeat in my workshops when we want to do something fast and effective the first time.
Ideally, you should work with the luminosity masks to have maximum control in the layer mask. But we can apply it directly:
- We open the photograph in Adobe Photoshop from Lightroom or Camera RAW.
- We are going to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Color Query.
- On 3D LUT File> FallColors.look. It is an easy way to achieve autumn tones.
- To reinforce the effect, all you have to do is create a Curves adjustment layer and increase the contrast.

So now we just have to go out these days to look for the autumn in the woods or the city and try to get that perfect photo that we have been trying to get for so long …
