At the moment, Avatar 2: The path of water ranks in the top three highest-grossing movies of all time, but how much money in net earnings did it actually generate for 20th Century Studios?
This week, Deadline released specific numbers around the expenses and benefits corresponding to the multi-million dollar James Cameron film; an epic sequel that, according to the analysis of the medium (and to the surprise of no one), was the blockbusters most profitable of all 2022, above Top Gun: Maverick.
At the box office, the science fiction sequel generated $683 million dollars (MDD) in the US; $246 million in China, and $1,387.7 million in the rest of the world. This leads to a box office total of $2,317.7 million. Now, according to Deadline, 54% of that figure ended up directly in the hands of the study; that is to say, $1,268.7 million dollars for theatrical exhibition, which added to the collections for purchase and rental for home consumption ($150 million dollars) and for the concession of broadcasting rights on television and streaming ($200 million), led to 20th Century Studios pocketing $1,618.7 million (not counting revenue from the use of the Avatar brand in Disney theme parks).
However, it remains to be determined how much it cost the studio to produce and distribute. Avatar 2: The path of water in order to obtain your net profits. And according to the same numbers from the news portal, production costs are estimated at $400 million dollars. In addition, we must consider the payment for talent participation ($300 million dollars); cost of impressions and advertisements ($175 million USD); video costs ($100 million dollars); interest and general expenses ($72 million), and residual expenses ($40 million).
Thus, it turns out that the total expenses were $1,087 million dollars, which subtracted from the income valued at $1,618.7 million dollars, give net profits $531.7 million. Not bad for Pandora!
