The list of diseases that exist is too long, although there are some that cause more concern than others. Everything is due to its high incidence and mortality. Therefore they have been classified as global public health problems and within the list tumors stand out. Although it is already a fairly serious issue, the future does not look very encouraging because an increase in the new cases of cancer in the following years.
First cases detected in the world
To begin with, it should be noted that it is a pathology almost as old as man. Some time ago, a team of anthropologists from the The University of Granada (UGr) in Spain identified in Egypt the remains of two mummies from the Pharaonic era who lived approximately in the year 2 thousand BC When doing an in-depth analysis, it was confirmed that they died of breast cancer.
To carry out the investigation, computerized tomography was required, a technique considered one of the most modern and that allows obtaining precise results. Using a state-of-the-art scanner that is capable of making 124 simultaneous tomographic cuts, it was detected one of the oldest cases of tumors that have been recorded.
But although the pathology is not new, in recent times it has shown an exponential increase in its incidence. There are several reasons but among the main ones is the increase in life expectancy. Now the population lives longer and that implies a greater risk of developing diseases of this type in adulthood.
Similarly, another factor to consider is the change in the lifestyle of the majority of the population. Aspects such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, obesity and lack of physical activity are the perfect combination to develop multiple types of tumors.
Future world outlook
Now, although technology has taken leaps and bounds in Medicine, it does not mean that everything is favorable. The clearest example can be seen with a report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in which it is shown that much remains to be done.
Based on figures taken from the World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 2000 there were 10.1 million new cases of cancer on the planet. For 2018 the figure was 18.1 million and the most terrible thing is that it is estimated that by 2040 there will be 27 million affected.
As can be seen, the disease maintains an upward trend and the most affected are low- and middle-income countries. Despite the advances made in Medicine, the problem is that not everyone has the possibility of accessing this type of innovation. In addition, it should be considered that a large part of the population does not have the habit of going to preventive medical consultations. As a consequence, the disease is detected in advanced stages or even patients die without knowing that they had a disease of this type.
