The old Namekian, adoptive grandfather of the bounty hunter, tells the story of how Bardock invaded his planet, along with the other Saiyans, but also how he, Granola and his mother were left alive. But not only this, he also helped them get to safety and even got into trouble for it.
When asked why he helped those he was supposed to kill, Bardock replied that it was a “whim”. A new flashback could indicate that this has to do with Gine, her partner and her newborn son Kakarotto. Once Monaito finished telling the story of how Bardock saved him, he turned to Goku, amazed at the incredible resemblance between the two, asking him if he knew him or was friends with him.
The hero has no idea what they are talking about and replies that he doesn’t know much about the Saiyans, because he grew up on Earth next to his grandfather. Then it is Vegeta who intervenes to tell the truth: Bardock is Goku’s father. The surprise is for everyone, from Kakarotto himself to Monaito and Granola.
“Kakarot, Bardock is your father’s name,” says the Saiyan prince. Also, after hearing Monaito’s story, he assures that Goku inherited that “weakness” (kindness) from his father. Granola listens shocked how the man he was about to kill is the son of the one who saved him forty years ago.
