Experts reveal that post-traumatic stress from the earthquake can manifest 6 to 8 weeks later.
According to a study carried out by the UNAM, 20% of the people who lived through S-19 will suffer this psychological damage, which, if not attended in time, can last up to 20 years without reversal. Post-traumatic stress manifests between six and eight weeks after the traumatic event, but in some individuals, it will be evident up to three months after the earthquakes have occurred, according to experts.
The earthquakes also caused? Collapses? emotional needs to be recognized and rebuilt. In some people, the survival instinct blocked the immediate emotional impact of earthquakes to make way for rational sanity that would allow them to solve the urgent needs that daily life demands. However, days later, when apparently things had already? Normalized? Post-traumatic stress, which is the chronification of poorly managed acute stress, began to manifest itself. The symptoms are expressed in different ways according to the evolutionary stage: children, young people, adults or older adults. Children whose parents or caregivers suffer from post-traumatic stress are more likely to develop it. In older adults, it is complicated by the diseases that they have, especially if they are disabling if they live alone or show difficulty moving around on their own.
Post-traumatic stress requires specialized care for its treatment, hence the importance of seeking professional help as soon as possible. A child suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder suffers from the following symptoms:
- Repeatedly play the earthquake.
- Nightmares or distressing dreams of the event.
- Fear of separating from their parents.
- Regressive behaviors: finger sucking, tantrums.
- Aggressiveness
- Difficulty to sleep.
- Increased sensitivity. Frequent crying.
- Intense fear of school.
- Decrease in school performance.
- Isolation
To help these little ones and the general public, the Mexican Association of Group Analytical Psychotherapy will offer this Saturday, December 16, the workshop? Let’s strengthen our minds for 2018 by reconstructing the emotional collapses after S19 ?, aimed at everyone who feels discomfort emotional from the earthquakes of last September. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the headquarters of AMPAG Norte, (General Molinos del Campo 64, Colonia San Miguel Chapultepec) and will be taught by Dr. Mónica Tiburcio, coordinator of the AMPAG clinic.
