One of the most exciting ship games is about to land on mobiles: the Wipeout saga will come to Android and iPhone as Wipeout Rush. According to the developers, with the jump to touch screens the mechanics will change: in the new title, direct control of the ships is left aside to manage strategies through cards. Futuristic style, now close to the comic.
Nostalgia has gone from simple emotion to become one of the best current sales pitches. Just take a look at the content platforms: movie and series “remakes” are the order of the day. It also happens in games: from the update of the classics to the current graphic needs to the rebirth of the mythical video game sagas. Because, how many games did you play on the PlayStation or PSP Wipeout?
Wipeout Rush, from a racing game to a card game
We do not really know how the developers have combined the different elements of Wipeout Rush, because the description they make of the title does not quite fit what we would expect from Wipeout. According to Amuzo and Rogue, the creators and distributors of the new installment of the franchise, Wipeout Rush offers a unique experience with a “card-based racing game”.
As seen in the first gameplay of the new game, the creators use the qualities of the touch screen to deliver a portrait view game where Skill controlling ships at full speed no longer prevails. Instead, Wipeout Rush urges you to create different strategies using collectible cards.
Different ships to choose from depending on the type of race (a total of 60, all originals from console games), 12 championships, 5 different tracks, two game modes (quick game and championship), the prevailing aesthetic is based on the comic style and its electronic soundtrack is original.
As in most mobile games, Wipeout Rush will allow you to collect the different cards as the game develops. Ships, weapons, accessories, tracks … And the typical game currency with which to gain advantages; that can surely be acquired directly through the already so common micropayments.
According to the description of Wipeout Rush, everything seems to indicate that this transfer from consoles to mobile makes Wipeout lose most of its essence along the way. Of course, we will have to wait to judge it: the developers confirm that the game will arrive on Android and iPhone at the end of 2021.
