Brief biography Henry Ford
Henry was born on July 30, 1863, in Dearborn, Michigan, the firstborn of six children born to William and Mary Ford.
He grew up on a prosperous family farm and was educated in a one-class school, where soon noted for his interest in mechanics. This interest was transformed into genius, which earned him the recognition of being “one of the great industrialists in the world”.
The culmination of his experiments was the construction of a self-propelled vehicle – the quadricycle – in 1896. The first Ford engine began its history in the kitchen of his home at 58 Bagley Avenue.. It was quickly followed by what would be his next design, which consisted of an engine mounted on a frame supported by four bicycle wheels – the first Ford vehicle.
In 1903, the Ford Motor Company was founded, with Henry Ford holding a 25.5% shareholding and acting as Vice President and Chief Engineer. Initially, only a few vehicles were produced at the factory on Mack Avenue, Detroit, where two or three people assembled the vehicles using custom-designed and custom-built components. The first vehicle made by the company was sold in July 1903 and Henry became President, owning the company three years later.
Henry Ford made his dream of producing a car that became affordable, reliable and efficient with the introduction of the Model T in 1908. This vehicle ushered in a new era in personal transportation – it was easy to drive, maintain and maneuver on rough roads, and was immediately successful.
It was not until 1913 when Ford patented the assembly line for mass production that it achieved success.
In 1918, half of all cars in the United States were Model Ts, of which 15 million units were sold.
Henry Ford passed away at his home in Fairland, Dearborn, on April 7, 1947 at 11:40 AM.
