The manager explains that the company still has to design plans to meet the objectives, but in 2025 it will make the first cash cut and, to the 40% reduction in carbon emissions that was achieved at the end of 2020, another will be added. 40% by 2025.
This reduction includes the entire production chain of the company, from agricultural processes to packaging. Although in this the company has a long way to go and is already working hand in hand with farmers to carry out better practices in barley crops.
To achieve neutrality in the use of water, the company’s plants will return to the environment all, or more, of the water used during their production processes, such as washing returnable beer containers. Some of the factories already have water infiltration wells.
The facilities that for now already meet these objectives are those located in areas of water stress (Monterrey, Guadalajara, Tecate and Toluca), and those of Navojoa and Orizaba will be added. Meoqui, which is one of Heineken’s most sustainable plants, will also have changes to meet the goals. “We are nine years away from the goal being met and in some cases the technology to reach that point does not even exist yet, but the ambition is there,” says Mascarúa.
As part of these commitments, the company provides drinking water in cans, which are produced in the Orizaba factory, to marginalized areas and others where a disaster has occurred, an action that is now being implemented worldwide.
In addition, the brewery plans to use an average of 2.55 liters of water per liter of beer produced in its seven breweries in 2025, when the international standard is 2.9 liters. “The problem of water in the world and in Mexico is a serious problem and it is an issue that not only belongs to private initiative. (…) It is a multifactorial issue and we all have to work and join forces ”, he points out.
