It is clear that 2020 is going to leave its mark on many people. The effects of the coronavirus on the labor market are being devastating in all sectors. Even so, there are professions that have better prospects than others, but it seems that boys and girls still have their own dreams.
As Business Insider has published in the United States, the brightest future, at least in the world’s leading economy, is in the medical and technology sectors. But “the news we find when we ask the smallest of the house [in Spain] what they want to be tomorrow are not too many. Boys and girls continue to want to carry out the same professions as the young people surveyed 16 years ago, back in 2004, although it is true that medicine and nursing have improved their positions ”, they say from Adecco.
“In general, what do exist are great differences between boys and girls. For example, one more year most of them would like to have a profession linked to sports (soccer players, basketball players, Formula 1 drivers, tennis players …) followed by those who would bet on making a career within the forces of order and national security (Police, firefighters, civil guards, forest guards…) ”, continue from the company specialized in human resources; “They, on the other hand, prefer professions related to caring for others and teaching and training, followed by artistic professions or those related to the digital world, fashion and beauty.”
“The Labor Statistics Office (of the United States) in its Employment Projection program publishes job growth predictions for hundreds of professions,” they explain from Business Insider that it has published a list of jobs with the best prospects and in the Top-10 there are three sanitary jobs; nurses (No. 1), responsible for health services (8) and other medical professions (9). Additionally, there are two purely computer/digital professions; computer software and applications developer (2) and IT manager (10).
“When I grow up, a soccer player”, the most repeated
Returning to Adecco’s study, it is surprising that only two digital professions are among the preferred ones for children – YouTuber (6.3%) and computer science (4.4%) – and none among girls. But the number of young people who want to be footballers is surprising. Although almost a quarter of Spanish children want to emulate Messi or Cristiano (especially the former, who they would see as the best possible boss), it is surprising that it is the fifth profession chosen by girls (7%).
Girls are the ones who, unlike last year, see a more altruistic character in the decision that motivates choosing one profession or another and believe that the vital purpose of people when choosing work is to be able to help others (41,7 %) Have they caught the applause at 8:00 pm during the confinement? Behind the desire to help are earning money (29.7%) and dedicating themselves to something they like (28.6%). Also, more than a fifth of children believe that it is essential to “help others” (22.2%), but there are more who would choose their profession to dedicate themselves to what they like (45.2%) and earn money ( 32.6%).
In addition, they are aware that, to work, there are certain essential qualities. When asked what qualities they think are the most important to be a good worker, boys are more practical and girls decline for more empathic attitudes.
They defend that it is important to make an effort (28.9%), study (13.5%) and be committed (9.8%); they, on the contrary, opt for kindness (32.7%), empathy (25.2%) and passion (16%), although they also talk about the importance of effort (11%). Languages are gaining strength and both they (8.7%) and women (10%) affirm that mastering them is very important to be successful at work.
Although it seems clear that the future lies in the health and digital professions, it seems that only the former have entered the dreams of the little ones, how much responsibility for those tastes can be attributed to Covid-19? Possibly more than we thought.
