Following the premiere of The little Mermaidthe new remake live action Produced by Disney, it will be inevitable for the public to wonder which version of Princess Ariel is their favorite: perhaps the one from the original 1989 film or perhaps the one personified here by Halle Bailey?
It should be noted that the remake directed by Rob Marshall has been very well received by the public – a 95% approval on Rotten Tomatoes – and much of the audience and critics seem to agree that Bailey makes the titular character his own with enormous charisma and a powerful voice. But regardless of the acclaimed interpretation of the twenty-something actress, there are also those who applaud this new version of Ariel for having a more elaborate development and attentive to current values around women.
Such is the case of the actress and model Jessica Alexanderwho in the live action of The little Mermaid embodies Vanessa, the human alter ego of the evil Ursula, the Sea Witch. In a recent interview with The FaceAlexander stated that on many occasions the importance of making remakes lies in offering “an updated point of view” to narratives that, although very beloved, are to a certain degree outdated.
“I don’t think you have to redo everything,” said the Londoner. “But it’s important to give movies like The little Mermaid an updated point of view; especially when it comes to women’s stories ».

For Jessica Alexander, some animated classics of the House of Mouse came to capture in their female characters a “bit of servile” nature. On the other hand, in Halle Bailey’s Ariel, a notion of “modern woman” is perceptible, which, in Alexander’s eyes, is enough to put this new version of The little Mermaid above the original.
“Old Disney movies are great,” he told The Face. However, its protagonists can be a bit subservient. There’s still a lot of beauty in those stories, but it’s fun to bring the modern woman into them. When I was little I loved Ariel, but I like Halle’s Ariel much more«.
