Axie Infinity, the popular non-fungible token (NFT)-based play-to-earn game, faced another attack on its Discord server early Wednesday, causing its bot, MEE6, to be compromised.
MEE6 is a popular Discord bot that is primarily used to automate roles and messages, and is implemented by numerous cryptocurrency projects. The attackers used the compromised bot to add permissions to a fake Jiho account, and subsequently issued a fake announcement regarding a token mint.
The developers managed to remove the compromised MEE6 bot from the main server and deleted the fake messages as well. However, the project’s official Twitter account warned that many users could continue to see the fake message until they restart their Discord session.

We have removed the Mee6 bot from the server and will never do a surprise mint.— Axie Infinity (@AxieInfinity) May 18, 2022
The ads have been removed, but some users may continue to see the message until they restart their Discord.

The developers also stated that the attack on MEE6 is nothing new and that many projects have faced similar problems. However, the official MEE6 support channel on Discord denied the hacking allegations, stating that they had checked with their engineers and had not seen any unusual activity.
Many believe that the hackers first compromised the admin accounts and then gained access to the alternate admin account using MEE6. This helped them to send webbook messages while hiding the compromised admin account.
The Discord bot altercation comes a month after one of the biggest robberies at Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge, which saw the loss of over $600 million in crypto assets. The recent wave of security flaws has eroded the community’s confidence in the game, which was once seen as a revolutionary project for the world of video games.
