He considers that Hollywood studios operate under the assumption that such a genre is a conception aimed exclusively at children’s audiences. And it precisely intends to demonstrate the opposite, as it did in the recent pinocchio.
“Animation has given us many indelible images over the years, but in many ways the industry wants to keep it on the children’s table,” he explained. “So I want to continue to push the medium into areas that demonstrate its ability.”
Published in 2015, Ishiguro’s novel tells a quest story in an England of the Middle Ages, after the Arthurian legends. Hit by a fog that forces people to forget, there is an elderly couple who leaves their home to go on a journey in search of a son they barely remember.
On the way they will meet a Saxon warrior named Wistan; a young man stigmatized by an injury; and an old man named Sir Gawain, who was Arthur’s last living knight. Together they will face the dangers of the journey, Lord Brennus’s soldiers, monks practicing strange rites of atonement, and presences far less earthly. But each of these travelers carries with them secrets, guilt pending redemption and, in some case, an atrocious mission to fulfill”, explains the official synopsis of the work.
Del Toro confessed that for now he is already developing a look-book of the project. An artifact that will define the visual style of the film, supported by the script that he develops together with Kelly. If all goes well in two years, production will begin.
