“I’m a big fan of yours, but I don’t know what to call you? Shall I call you Guillermo or Doctor Del Toro? ”, Jimmy Fallon commented in his interview with the film director in reference to the honorary doctorate that he received from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
In this context, when Fallon asked the filmmaker where he had obtained his doctorate, Del Todo replied that it was “the best, the biggest, the most famous university in Latin America,” referring to UNAM.

Guillermo del Toro is currently promoting his most recent animated film in stop motion, Pinocchio, that premiered in independent theaters nationwide in Mexico and this December 9 was released to the world through Netflix.
On November 17, the UNAM University Council awarded the film director as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water and others, an Honoris Causa Doctorate for his contribution and support to cinema and other arts, as well as for his extensive film career.
The ceremony was held at the Palacio Minería in Mexico City and although Del Toro was unable to attend in person, he was invested at the UNAM headquarters in Los Angeles, California.
“It is a unique honor. I think the ability to travel in creative spaces that are global is important as a Mexican, but always remember that your roots will never stop being in Mexico. That is what makes this moving and personal moment because it comes from a university that has gone hand in hand in the deepest cultural life in Mexico,” said Guillermo del Toro upon receiving the award.
