Maybe you are one of the remaining players within the 3 games that Guerrilla Games will pull from their servers, that’s right, if you’re one of the people still playing the older versions of Killzone from Guerrilla Games or RIGS: Mechanized Combatsad news has arrived, as the online versions of those games are now running.
But this is about to change, as Guerrilla has announced that it has plans to shut down the online servers of Killzone: MercenaryKillzone Shadow Fall, and RIGS: Mechanized Combat on August 12, so those games will go single-player from then on.
Since Guerrilla shared the news about the plans for the servers of these three games earlier today, through the studio’s social accounts, the online multiplayer modes present in the games will be the most affected area, but Guerrilla confirmed that all online features will generally stop working once that date arrives.
So out of the three games, Killzone: Mercenary was the first to release in September 2013, where it was only playable on PlayStation Vita, and two months later, it arrived. Killzone Shadowfallwhich released in November 2013 for PlayStation 4, while RIGS: Mechanized Combat League (not part of the Killzone series) is the most recent of the trio, releasing in October 2016.
This is because of how old those games are, that server crashes shouldn’t come as a surprise, but there have been other indications over the last year that suggested this sort of thing could happen, so while people at one point had been hoping for a new Killzone game following the release of the PlayStation 5, those hopes were dashed in early 2021 when the official Killzone site was “retired” and instead redirected to the PlayStation site.
It’s clear that Guerrilla could always surprise PlayStation fans with a new Killzone game now that Horizon Forbidden West is live and still getting occasional updates, but the prospects aren’t looking too good given what we’ve seen happen over the past year.
So for those still playing the aforementioned games, you’ll want to make sure you get your Killzone fix there before its online modes are pulled next month, or it’ll be too late.
