Grupo IMU, a leading company in the commercialization of advertising spaces in urban furniture and other formats in Mexico, awarded the 14th School Contest “Our planet is the net”, in which schools from Mexico City, State from Mexico, Guadalajara and Pachuca, managing to collect 7,505.75 kilograms of used batteries, thus reducing the impact that they could have on the environment if they were not handled properly.
Through this contest, girls, boys, young people, teachers and parents are made aware of the importance of their collaboration in caring for the planet with actions such as the responsible management of this waste that, if not disposed of correctly, can be harmful to the environment due to their heavy metal content (mercury, nickel, cadmium and lead).
In the fourteenth edition of the contest, 44 schools and 23,597 basic education students participated, in addition, visits were made to some schools to give talks to the school community about the proper handling of used batteries, which can be deposited in any of the 400 columns that Grupo IMU has installed in different parts of Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Guadalajara and Pachuca, to later be delivered to a recycling plant.
The general director of Grupo IMU, Gerardo Cándano, highlighted that the company’s social and sustainability programs seek to make cities better, and one of the results is that, from 2007 to date, IMU Recicla, the largest program, open to the general public, has collected 1,300 tons of used batteries, which has prevented further environmental contamination.
“For 15 years we started with the school contest ‘Our planet is the net’, which is part of our IMU Recicla program that concentrates the main pillars and actions of sustainability and social responsibility of our company. Through it, we recognize and value the collaboration of the school community in efforts to care for the planet”, highlighted Cándano.
The schools that obtained first place in each of the categories with less than 500 students and with more than 500 students enrolled, received computers and recognition as prizes, in each of the three places that participated in the contest.
The winning schools in the 14th “Our planet is the net” School Contest were: Colegio Simón Bolívar, in Mexico City; Foresta International School, in the State of Mexico; oxford college, in Guadalajara, and in Hidalgo, the Columbia College and the General Secondary School number 1.
