Google announced that As of March 22, its News Showcase initiative is now available in Mexicoin which more than 80 media outlets in the country participate with their content available on the Google News platform.
This announcement represents a milestone in Google’s relationship with the media since, for the first time, the popular search engine will pay the media for the content they publishwhile editors will be able to curate and feature the news of their choice.
This new tool will start in Mexico with 83 media, including HIGH LEVELnational and local in scope, and the goal is for up to 250 media outlets to publish in News Showcase, said Andrea Fornes, director of News at Google for Latin America.
“Readers will be able to access more and better news content through Googlewhile the media get compensation for it, “said the board in the presentation.
News Showcase, part of the Google News Initiative, is now available in 20 countries and reaches more than 2,000 news outletsand its intention is to reinforce the work of journalists in the development of quality journalism.
Google will pay a fixed monthly fee to the media that are in its initiative, whether they are free access or by subscription. This tool differs from Google Discover in that it is the editors who select the news they want to highlight.
How to enter Google News Showcase?
This tool is completely free for users to access and they can access it from the Google News application, and in the “For you” and “Kiosk” sections you will be able to find media news panels that participate in Showcase. Panels can be news summaries, or publishers will also offer in-depth content panels on a particular story.
