Google’s cloud unit announced on Friday the formation of an internal team that will create services for blockchain developers and those running applications based on the technology. This comes amid an explosion of interest, activity, and adoption of cryptocurrency and Web 3.0 tools by traditional sectors of the economy.
Web 3.0 infrastructure of the future
The Vice President of Google Cloud, Amit Zavery reportedly told his team in an email on Friday the goal of making Google Cloud Platform the first choice for Web 3.0 developers. Google Cloud is the set of cloud computing services of the company, on which all projects related to Google are executed.
According to CNBC, the email read: “Although the world is still in the early stages of its adoption of Web 3.0, it is a market that is already showing tremendous potential, with many customers asking us to increase our support for Web 3.0 and cryptocurrency-related technologies.”
An internal team focused exclusively on Web 3.0 development shows Google’s commitment to innovation in this space. It also follows his creation of a digital asset team in January, which was the result of the massive interest in non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.
Zavery added that Google’s future moves could involve a system that simplifies accessibility to blockchain data, as well as a streamlined process for building and running blockchain-based nodes for transactions. Supposedly, new job offers have appeared in Google’s internal tool, Grow.

However, there are those who do not believe that Google’s attention to Web 3.0 is worth it. Well-known American software engineer Grady Booch tweeted his disappointment, saying it’s a waste of resources.
What a waste of your resources @Google.
I’m disappointed in your choices here. https://t.co/LWoFSmAtlS

Booch co-developed the Unified Modeling Language, which provided a universal standard view for designing software systems.
Big Tech and Web 3.0
Google isn’t the only “Big Tech” giant to have set its sights on the future of decentralized infrastructure. Major industry players such as Meta and Amazon have also started to enter this space with involvement in the metaverse and interest from NFTs.
However, the challenge for the Big Tech cabal lies in the very spirit of the Web 3.0 space they are entering. The world of cryptocurrencies was built on decentralized and peer-to-peer methods, which surpassed the surveillance and data collection of companies like Google.
For those who interact with the space with the intention of having more freedom in the digital realm, the entry of giants like Google and Meta could be a cause for concern. However, according to an interview with Zavery and CNBC, Google’s initial plans are intended to help the adoption of innovative Web 3.0 technologies.
“We’re not trying to be part of that crypto wave directly,” he said. “We are providing technologies for companies to use and take advantage of the distributed nature of Web 3.0 in their businesses and enterprises today.”
Currently, Google’s back-end cloud services pale in comparison to those of Amazon and Microsoft. This new team will help bolster growth in this area, where early offerings could include better node management and blockchain-based data software through third-party applications.
This could be just the beginning of Google’s footprint in the decentralized space. If Google manages to give up hypercentralization, its bid to enter the world of Web3 could be something important.
