Although it seemed complicated, the Chinese social network achieved what dozens of applications have tried for many years without success: defeating the Zuckerberg emporium to become the most downloaded app in the world.
Even if TikTok I had been competing face to face against WhatsApp and Facebook for years for this title, it was not until 2020 that the application was crowned the most downloaded app on the planet. This according to the latest Nikkei Asia report.
The firm revealed that in China and the United States, the application owned by Byte Dance was crowned as the most downloaded. In the case of Japan, TikTok remained in third place below LINE and Instagram.
In the case of the entire Asian continent, TikTok is still the second most downloaded app after Facebook.
The world falls in love with TikTok
What is striking is that in 2019 TikTok was the fourth most downloaded application on the planet, which is why it had the most important growth of the top 10 most downloaded apps in the world, advancing three positions in just one year.
Nikkei Asia mentions that Facebook and WhatsApp remained exactly the same as in 2019; with the second and third place, respectively.
However, the biggest drop was reported by Messenger, which went from the first to the fifth position in just one year. Instagram became the fourth most downloaded application in the world in 2020.
Nikkei Asia did not disclose the number of downloads of any application, however, Sensor Tower data revealed that the Chinese social network was downloaded 2.6 billion times during 2020,
The same company reported that during the first quarter of 2021 TikTok had been downloaded another 315 million times worldwide.
Other applications that also grew significantly in the United States market were Discord and Google Duo, as their role as communication channels and video calls have been vital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
