The Golden Crocodile CenoteIn addition to being special for its natural beauty and the stories that surround it, it is also a place that draws special attention for being located on the border strip between Mexico and the neighboring country of Belize.
How to get to the Golden Crocodile
The cenote is located in the southern part of Chetumal, our starting point. From there, it will take you about two hours to reach a town called The Union, so you must follow highway 186 Chetumal-Villahermosa. Upon reaching the intersection bridge, take the Escárcega/Campeche exit and continue on Highway 186 for approximately 25 km until you reach the community of Ucum.

From Ucum, take the deviation to the left on the Ucum-La Unión highway. After following that route for approximately 88 km you will arrive at The Union. There are buses that arrive directly, although you can also take a taxi, just calculate the expenses well.

A special feature of this cenote is that you can get to its shore in two ways. The first is walking, and the second is descending an 80-meter cracked cliff that, in addition to giving you incredible panoramic views, lets you see the biodiversity of the environment from above.
From there, you can elucidate a legend of why the cenote is called golden crocodileand it is that when there is too much sun on the slope of the place, the silhouette of a crocodile is formed and due to the luminosity, the bath of sunlight that it receives at a certain time of day is considered golden.
It is also said that it was given that name because at night a golden crocodile has been seen emerging from the depths of the cenote that protects a treasure inside the cenote.
There are other versions of the neighbors, who assure that a large and old crocodile haunts the waters of the river and that the water reflects, among its games with the sun, the figure of a crocodile that from above is painted in golden tones.
The orange-crested garrobos
Within the variety of its fauna, there is the “garrobo” a kind of iguana that, due to its characteristics, lets you see this play of sunlight that is reflected in its orange crest, giving golden tones that you will surely like to observe. There are also hawks, howler monkeys, toucans and an almost inexhaustible variety of birds and insects.
