The charging infrastructure is key to the implementation of electric cars in Europe. But not just any charging system is valid, it is necessary to opt for a worldwide standard. ChariN and the German Association of the Automotive Industry will promote the CSS combined charging system in Germany.
Different reports have shown that the charging infrastructure of European countries leaves much to be desired. And not only in those in the south and more Mediterranean, but in those that until now were supposed to enjoy an adequate network such as Germany. If we add to this circumstance that the different manufacturers of electric cars are committed to embarking on-board chargers with different systemsthe consequence is that it is impossible to implement the electric car worldwide.
This is a serious problem, since Asians work with one charging standard, Americans with another and Europeans with another. The most real example is that Tesla has opened its superchargers so that battery-powered models of other brands can use this network. Otherwise, customers should find a charging point adapted to their model.
The CSS loading system will be a worldwide standard
Although the vast majority is already taking care to include the “CSS” combined charging system in the vast majority of new models, the German Association of the Automotive Industry -VDA- and the Charging Interface Initiative -CharIN-, an association group of vehicle manufacturers, energy providers and original equipment manufacturers -OEMs- have established a cooperation framework to establish the combined charging system “CSS” as a standard in Germany.
The objective is more than ambitious, since they have proposed to install one million public charging points by 2030, with a user interface that is especially easy to use for all customers, ensuring and guaranteeing smooth operation. Only in this way will it be possible for the progress of the electric car to be truly unstoppable, which will also mean installing charging points in back roads and not only on main highways or in urban areas.
Hildegard Müller, President of the VDA, has pointed out that “The transformation of the automotive industry is a task of the century that we are approaching energetically. A comprehensive and efficient charging infrastructure is and remains the key to the success of electric mobility. This applies to both the passenger and commercial car sectors. vehicles We are pleased to partner with CharIN to speed up the launch and make uploading easy and convenient for the public.”
