The 2021 DTM season has entered its final stretch. With three events and six races to go to finish its first campaign under GT3 regulations, the German competition can begin to draw its first conclusions. In this aspect, Gerhard Berger as head of ITR has wanted to value the good work that all the actors involved have done when shaping the renewed championship. Berger appreciates that “since Formula 1 the DTM is being watched” and more so now that the concept is consolidated with a more ambitious 2022 calendar that reflects that “The DTM is on the right track, regardless of who it weighs”.
In fact, Gerhard berger He was very categorical about it: “When I talk to Verstappen, we talk more about the DTM than about Formula 1. I am aware that Formula 1 watches drivers like Albon or Lawson. They are pending of us. For 2022 we wanted to plan everything in advance, to give security to all parties involved. Publishing the calendar as soon as possible was the goal. Of the two locations that have yet to be announced, Italy is insured. Monza was a great start to the season, but it may be another track. The UK is on the radar, but it looks difficult because of Brexit and COVID-19.
Regarding the development of the championship itself, Berger added: «We are receiving very good feedback from the teams. And we have intense communication with all of them on competition weekends and between races. They all argue in a very sincere way. Our partner AVL is doing a very professional job with the ‘BoP’. They are working together with all the teams in a very transparent way. I am quite impressed by this. I am very happy with this season and I think we are on the right track with the DTM. We are competing under FIA regulations and each modification will be studied in due course.
