“We are observing an exponential growth curve of cases. Yesterday, January 11, a record number was reached at the federal level with more than 33,600 new cases and also a record of active cases with more than 70,000 active cases.
“In Mexico, according to the analysis of the Ministry of Health at the federal level, a fourth wave is expected higher than the third. And compared to the same time in 2021 many more cases are observed, “he explained.
PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne explained that compared to the same period last year, in the Americas region, there is a 250% increase in the number of infections.
He added that in just one week, the cases practically doubled from 3.4 million to 6.1 million, from January 1 to 8.
He reported that the Omicron variant is present in 42 countries and territories in the region and in the first week of 2022, an increase of 77% in cases and an increase in deaths of 31% have been reported.
Carissa F. Etienne added that, compared to the previous week, 17 countries have reported increases of more than 50% in their hospital admissions and in the intensive care area.
“Compared to last year, during the week ending January 8, 2021, the Americas reported a total of 2.4 million cases, while this year to the same date, there are 6 million reported cases, which represents an increase of 250% ”, explained the Director of PAHO.
