We love Andalusian villages, whether they are located in the mountains or on the beach. However, we had not yet told you about one of its crown jewels of Andalusian natural heritage. It is a beautiful white village that hides a small bath of hot springs and a particular history. It is called Baños del Vilo and is located in upper Axarquia, a few kilometers from the border between Malaga and Granada and 2.5 km from Periana.
Half hidden by the strong vegetation and the very abundant waters of its surroundings, the spring of medicinal waters of Baños del Vilo has been used from the time of the Romans. Thus, by the 18th and 19th centuries it was already considered one of the most important in Andalusia. The place acquired the status of select and fashionable, which was attended by the personalities of the time.
The reason is that in 1765 the first analyzes of the waters were carried out and the result caused the place to be enabled and filled to the recovery of the sick and the intake of medicinal waters.
Its sulfhydric, magnesium-calcium and nitrogenous waters are good for skin conditions and leave the skin with a characteristic softness. Another particularity is that the temperature usually stays around 21 degrees all year round, without major changes. In addition to this, its attractiveness also lies in its shape, which is that it is only a curbstone pool sculpted more than a thousand years ago, with the corresponding sensation of going back in time.
Unfortunately, the spa suffered a setback in 1907. A major storm in the area caused a huge flood that destroyed the spa and everything that surrounds the watercourses. Nowadays only a small pool has been preserved of these medicinal waters. Although, yes, well equipped and surrounded by watercourses and paths. Getting to it is not complicated and it is a place where it is always nice to be, even in the hottest months.
