Throughout the year there are different celebrations but today it is one of the most important. It is all because every October 23 the Doctor’s Day takes place in Mexico and it serves to celebrate those who, like you, are dedicated to taking care of the health of others. It is not an easy job and more so in recent times when the workload and dangers have increased due to the pandemic.
For the aforementioned, health personnel deserve full recognition for the activities they carry out. Although technology has shown great advances, it will always be a complement because the empathy offered by a doctor can never be matched.
Now, although it is a profession of great importance, countries like Mexico face multiple adversities. One of the main ones has its origin in the deficiencies that prevail within hospitals and health centers. Although despite all the barriers, they remain attentive and willing to help others.
On the other hand, it is necessary to talk about this special date. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes December 3 as Doctor’s Day, at the national level the official date is October 23 and there is a particular reason that you should know.
The reason for this celebration
It was in 1937 when federal authorities named October 23 as the Day of the Doctor in Mexico. The reason is so that the date coincided with the creation of the Establishment of Medical Sciences carried out in 1833, antecedent of the current Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In this regard, it was thanks to the closure of the then National and Pontifical University and the School of Surgery by decree of the then President Valentín Gómez Farías, that the creation of said Establishment merged the careers of doctor and surgeon in our country.
Since then, it is the date on which all doctors in our country are congratulated and recognized. It is also the day that the Medical Merit Award is awarded each year.
On the other hand, although Doctor’s Day in Mexico is a celebration that has been present for decades, it had never been recognized at the legal level. Although as of last year it changed because it was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the decree that makes this holiday official.
Having said all of the above, now what remains for us is to congratulate you on your valuable work. Although beyond the day, recognition of medical personnel should be every day for the importance of their actions for the benefit of others.
