When the project was announced in August 2021, The Hollywood Reporter shared that the production was being described as something similar to Two knaves after the lost emerald (Romancing the Stone, 1984), starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. In that film, a romantic novel writer travels to Colombia with a mysterious package so that her sister can be released by the drug traffickers who kidnap her. She there she falls in love with an adventurer.
The truth is Ghosted also shares items with True Lies (1994), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, in which Special Agent Harry Tasker leads a double life and works as a spy for Omega, a super-secret government agency tasked with ending nuclear terrorism, while his family believes he is a salesman.
